Welcome to my blog, where I share highlights of everything from my client's wedding days and portrait sessions, to recent features and our adventures around the world.

Hi, I'm Alicia.

The Other First Look

Mar 9, 2017

It’s certainly no secret that I love first looks; I mean, I have published a half-dozen different blog posts about them and I’m seriously considering giving them their own category section on the blog! And I love them not only as a Washington, DC wedding photographer because they generally make for a smoother day, but more importantly, I love them as a former bride. It is still, hands down, my favorite moment of our wedding day and the reason why I got to spend so much more time with our friends and family. I absolutely understand why some brides hesitate to include one in their wedding and anyone looking for more in-depth information about a traditional first look between a bride and groom can find that information here, here, here, here or here (I told you I write about these a lot!). But all that aside, bride and groom first looks aren’t what I want to chat about today… instead, I wanted to talk about the other first look; the one between a bride and her father!

I think it’s safe to say that most dads, no matter how tough of an exterior they may present, have a soft spot for their daughters. Your wedding day can be especially challenging for them; while they are so excited for you, they are simultaneously sad to say goodbye to their little girl. A dad and daughter first look isn’t something that requires setting aside a ton of time, but even just having those few moments together before you say “I do” is incredibly meaningful. I would, however, highly recommend mentioning your interest in doing one of these to your photographer as you start to plan on the day — that way they can add it to your timeline so Dad knows what time to be dressed and ready to see you! It will also allow them time to scope out a clear location in the hallway or bridal suite. All the images below are some of my favorite moments during these dad and daughter first looks.

Bonus! While most brides have their bridesmaids help them get dressed, sometimes the room is too small or they would like that time to be a bit more intimate with just their mom and siblings. In those cases, you can also do a first look with your bridesmaids like some of the pictures below!
