I’m willing to bet you’d be hard pressed to find someone who will tell you that marriage is easy. I know I certainly wouldn’t and Rob and I just passed the five-year mark. Amongst all the good days are the bad; those hard, challenging moments when you have to fight for what you believe in – each other. And, while it’s sad to have to think about, the reality is that so often, more and more people are finding it easier to give up than fight. Which is why when you hear of a legacy couple – those who have fought the fight and won – it’s almost unbelievable.
I had the privilege of photographing Phyllis and Ken at RiverOaks in Charleston, SC while attending Belle Lumiere’s workshop. This amazing couple is celebrating fifty-seven (yes, you read that right, 57!) years of marriage this summer, a point in their lives that they both agree has required a lot of hard work, but that it was worth every moment of it. When I asked them for a few bits of marriage advice, Ken spoke up immediately and said it was simple: treat one another as equals. When you share your lives together in every aspect, good or bad, it makes it that much more worth living. Their natural chemistry was apparent in their every move and you could tell they forged an unbreakable bond with one another over the years. As they looked back through their album of memories one thing was clear; they both believed their lives weren’t worth living if it wasn’t for the other. Phyllis and Ken, thank you for allowing me to take a break from being a Washington, DC anniversary photographer to capture your love in Charleston!
If you missed it, their session was featured on one of my favorite blogs: Magnolia Rouge! And of course, a huge thank you to our amazing couple celebrating 57 years of marriage and all the incredible vendors that came together for this shoot!
