Emily and Mat were married on a cozy fall day in an intimate, private ceremony at the Inn at Little Washington. For anyone unfamiliar with this iconic venue, the Inn is a luxury country retreat tucked away in Washington, Virginia, known not only for its warmth and charm but also for its world-renowned Michelin-starred restaurant. It’s the kind of place where every corner feels intentional, indulgent, and quietly magical.
Upon arriving, I felt instantly enchanted by the town itself. The entire main street was lined with quaint shops, each one dressed to the nines in autumn splendor with towering cornstalk bundles, dried corn, and pumpkin displays so elaborate they felt like art installations. It was the perfect introduction to the atmosphere Emily and Mat had envisioned. Inside the Inn, the magic continued. Their in-house florist had transformed every tabletop into a celebration of texture and color, with lush seasonal arrangements that felt both luxurious and deeply rooted in the spirit of fall.
Emily and Mat were staying in the Gamekeeper’s Cottage, an aptly named rustic hideaway inspired by old-world hunting lodges. The cottage’s porch overlooked the Blue Ridge Mountains, an especially meaningful backdrop for these two hailing from Colorado, who wanted the mountains and peak foliage to frame their images. Late October delivered exactly that: sweeping views of reds, ambers, and golden yellows that seemed to glow even under a soft blanket of lingering clouds.
Despite the threat of rain, the skies held off just long enough for us to complete their portraits. The muted light, the crisp air, and the vibrant leaves created a painterly setting that made every moment feel intimate and timeless.
It is always an honor to photograph elopements, and being invited into such a heartfelt day is something I never take for granted. I’m so grateful to Emily and Mat for trusting me to document their beautiful celebration at the Inn at Little Washington.
