I love sharing Bridal Business posts more than anything else on the blog because it’s the chance to advise future brides on the little tips and tricks I’ve picked up over the years as a Washington, DC wedding photographer. I still have new ideas pop into my head on wedding days and jot them down in my notes to remember to blog about later and today’s post is a result of one of those “on the job” ideas!
There is one thing on your wedding day that you absolutely cannot go without, but will give you more trouble than you could ever imagine. I guarantee no bride would ever guess what I’m talking about but it’s your… wedding dress! Despite multiple trips to your bridal shop to get the perfect fit, it almost never fails that a bride has trouble with one big part of her dress — the bustle! I think the reason being is that in all those trips, so often you are never actually shown where and how to bustle. And even if you are shown, DOING is a completely different story!
Before your wedding, designate one of your bridesmaids who will have the responsibility of bustling your dress after portraits are complete for the day. Have them come with you to your final fitting so the staff can demonstrate exactly how it should be done and even see if they can practice in their presence. Once you have the dress home, get in it and let them try again. I promise – it may seem like those tiny little loops or hooks are easy to find in the dress shop, but they will go missing on a wedding day! You can help them make mental reminders of where they are for ease of locating later. I swear, this might sound silly or unnecessary, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found myself setting my camera down to help get in on the search for those darn bustle loops/hooks! Practice makes perfect and will give you back precious time on your wedding day… because trust me, they go by quickly and you don’t want to lose time with your guests!
