Weddings are a huge investment, no ifs or buts about it. I think it’s safe to say that while most couples and their parents will happily pay for high-quality services, they also look to cut costs where applicable. For some, that may mean having only beer and wine at your reception instead of a full open bar. Or perhaps you do a dinner service with only heavy hors d’ouevres rather than a full plated meal. There will always be minor changes you can make that will result in macro savings, but it’s important to remember to focus those on areas that don’t have a large impact on your overall day. As a Washington, DC wedding photographer, I, of course, believes that applies to photography as it’s truly the ONLY takeaway you will have after the day is over. When the cake has been eaten and the flowers have wilted, your memories will be preserved in your photos. But if you’re here and reading this post, I firmly believe you feel the same and don’t need to convince you of that today :)
Instead, I want to talk about why hiring a professional hair and makeup artist is a worthy investment. I’ve previously discussed a variety of “key” wedding day touch points, covering everything from DC wedding venues, planners, cakes, bouquets, and calligraphy, but think this is also a VERY worthy investment!
1. Be your Best Self
It’s SO not that you aren’t already beautiful! But the industries best professionals study methods that enhance a person’s best feature while subtly disguising the less flattering ones. Makeup artists take the time to learn how to choose the best colors for your individual coloring. They know to fix your shape your brows and hide those last-minute stress pimples. Professional hair stylist have worked with every type of hair from thin and limp to thick and frizzy and knows how to style it to best complement your wedding day look.
2. Use High-Quality Products
Beauty professionals come prepared with high-quality products that will last all day under any conditions. You won’t have to worry about your mascara dripping if you cry during the ceremony or your hair falling out during the middle of your first dance. They have special primers, setting sprays, and powders that are expertly applied to keep everything exactly where it should be! Trust me, that DC humidity can be awful!
3. Coordinating Wedding Party
A professional artist or team of artists will be able to help create a cohesive, uniform look amongst your entire wedding party. After all, this is YOUR wedding day and you don’t want Tiffany to be the center of attention because she decided to stand out from the rest of the group with a bright red lip and super smokey cat eye.
4. Looks Great on Camera!
Being a photographer, I, of course, cannot leave out the impact that professional hair and makeup has on your wedding photos! You may have heard before that makeup shows up differently in photos than it does to the naked eye and that is absolutely true; a camera seems to make 50% of your makeup just disappear. You’ll want to wear a bit more than you would on a regular basis, and a professional knows how to apply that without looking over the top. And no, we can’t photoshop it on after the fact :) In the same vain, a hair stylist will create a design that looks great from all angles so that no matter when or where you’re being photographed, your hair is perfect!
Fun fact: Did you know that certain translucent finishing powders look completely blended when applied in daylight, but under professional flash photography create white streaks across your face? I bet you didn’t, but a professional would!
5. Reduces Stress
I had to save this one for last because of all the great reasons to hire a professional hair and makeup artist, this may just be the best. Wedding days are crazy busy and even the calmest bride may feel herself getting stressed. Now add in trying to draw on the perfect eyeliner or have perfectly matching waves throughout your hair and often time “stage fright” will ensue! Do yourself a favor… plan to sit back, relax and let the pros do all the work for you! That way you can joke with your girls, drink champagne (with a straw to not mess up those perfect lips, of course!), and actually ENJOY your day!
