I was randomly searching on eBay for film cameras — specifically the Contax 645. I about choked when I saw the price and thought for a minute that I would never have the opportunity to shoot film. I wised up and realized that, just like in digital photography, there obviously had to be more than just one great camera! I did a little research and found a camera rated very similarly to the Contax and took the plunge. I ordered everything at once: camera, lens, light meter, film — because when that beauty arrived, I wanted to be able to use it! I read everything I could in the following days until it arrived, pushing actual work aside to scour blogs in hopes of learning all the secrets.
When it finally arrived, it was like an early Christmas present. Naturally, I sat Granger down outside, adjusted my settings based on the light meter and pushed the trigger. I immediately checked the back of the camera to make sure it looked okay and… oh, wait, there was nothing there! Definitely a big “a ha” moment; this was going to be very different!
After a few days, I knew I needed a human subject (sorry, Granger) and asked my sweet new friend Allison (of Allison Hopperstad Photography) to model for me. She kindly agreed and threw on her wedding dress to let me practice… the results are below and I’m pretty happy with how my first two rolls of film turned out!
