I had the honor of capturing Katie and Matt’s first anniversary session in Baltimore, MD a few weeks ago. Where to even being with these two?! I’ve known Katie since college as we were roommates together at JMU. She met Matt after we graduated, so the first time I had the pleasure of getting to know him was a few years ago at their Georgetown engagement session. I shared a bit about how they met in that post, but I’ve never shared a funny story that only Matt knew about for many, many months and have to tell now!
When I first got started in photography, I wanted to shoot anything and everything! I still have that feeling as I just love what I do, but I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have such a wide variety of clients that allow me to try out new things all time. Well, back in the day, I was really excited about the idea of capturing a proposal. I knew Matt and Katie had been dating for years and that their engagement had to be just around the corner. So I secretly e-mailed Matt about the idea of letting me in on his plan so that I could be there to capture it for him. As I said, I had never met Matt in person, he only knew me as Katie’s old roommate, and thought that I was just trying to fish for info to give to her! To throw me off, he told me that they had actually broken up recently and it just wasn’t common knowledge yet. I was devastated for my friend, but she didn’t know I was reaching out to Matt, so I couldn’t say anything until she was ready to talk to me about the breakup.
Well, a few weeks later, I get a text from Katie that includes a picture of her shiny engagement ring — Matt had just proposed while they were on vacation in Hilton Head, SC! He told her the story about how he knew “we” were trying to get the proposal details when she broke the news to him; she had NO idea what he was talking about and wasn’t in on it at all! They texted immediately to tell me and I couldn’t stop laughing — what a funny situation! I mean, yes, it taught me to never, ever ask a near-stranger about a proposal again, but he was so nice about the situation and allowed me to photograph them twice since :)
I had such a blast catching up with these two; I don’t see them nearly as much as I like since we don’t live super close by, but anytime we’re together it’s like we’ve never been apart. Thank you both for braving the April winds and exploring Baltimore with me! Happy First Anniversary, you two!
