After getting a couple’s engagement session date on the calendar, I often get asked, “what do we do if it rains!?”. Because, it goes without saying, most think of blue skies and sunshine when it comes to planning for their photos… although, from a photography perspective, a cloudy day certainly isn’t a bad thing — it acts as a diffuser to the sun and creates beautiful, even light that really makes your subject pop! I digress…
You can imagine my delight as Taylor and Jake’s engagement session approached in early March, that there was nothing but sunny skies forecasted for the date of their shoot. See, these two were traveling down to DC from Hoboken, NJ to have their photos taken at Union Station, so I wanted it to be just perfect. Taylor and Jake both grew up in the area and initially met during high school. They didn’t start dating until 5 years later when they reconnected during a reunion. At the time, they lived in different states and would travel to see one another by train, getting dropped off at and picked up from Union Station — so this spot is a special place in their love story.
As the date of our session approached, the sun remained but the threat of wind crept in. I wasn’t too worried about it at the time, but then the situation started to get more and more serious — a Nor’easter was heading down the coast and the winds from this storm were no joke! A combination of sleet and strong winds forced all the trains to shut down, leaving these two without a way to DC for their shoot the next day. They ended up renting a car and we waited an extra morning in the hopes of nicer weather; I think you’ll see from the photos that it was totally worth it! We had an absolutely perfect March morning and you couldn’t even tell that a crazy storm had blown through just 24 hours prior.
These two are getting married this November and I am so excited to capture their nuptials at Washington National Cathedral with a celebration afterwards at the Four Seasons in Georgetown. Taylor’s classic taste is sure to put an elegant spin on their wedding day!
