Hi, I'm Alicia.

Sotterley Plantation Engagement Session

Oct 22, 2020

Like so many of us who currently live in the Washington, DC area, Ellie and John are transients from outside the city. Ellie grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, and came to the district for school; she ended up staying after securing a job upon graduation. John grew up a bit closer, in rural Maryland, just 30 minutes or so from where we captured their engagement session at Sotterley Plantation on a gorgeous October morning. Our first plan for their shoot was washed out, literally, by the rains from Hurricane Delta that crept all the way up the east coast. But it was certainly worth the wait, as our rescheduled date greeted us with a stunning sunrise over a foggy morning in the rolling hills of MD. Sotterley Plantation wasn’t just a random choice for these two because of its beautiful gardens, it’s a place where John worked for many years and where his parents were married long ago!

Ellie and John met online, a true modern day romance, and hit things off immediately. They chatted quite a bit leading up to their first date, so it didn’t feel like meeting a stranger when they sat down at Georgia Brown’s in the heart of the city…. although, Ellie forgot to mention she was a vegetarian, so she had to politely decline John’s suggestion of trying the best fried chicken in town! Despite their different tastes in food, their love story continued and John proposed with a picnic on Teddy Roosevelt Island just a few weeks ago. Ellie said it was by no means a complete surprise, but John did have a few tricks up his sleeve and invited her entire family to join them all the way from Arkansas! Luckily, her family won’t have to make a return trip for the wedding as they are planning to tie the knot next July in Little Rock — COVID dependent, of course! In the meantime, enjoy a peek at their sweet engagement session at Sotterley Plantation in Hollywood, Maryland!
