Ohhh, first looks. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…
I’m not adamant about much with my clients. I truly think “to each their own” in the least selfish way possible. Yes, I’m here to help with your timeline and give you my professional opinion on the flow of the day, but every couple is so different and their wedding day should be a reflection of that. Their wedding day should be a celebration of who they are as a team because that is what we are all there for — to watch their unofficial union become a lifelong commitment. So if you love the idea of candle centerpieces even though Pinterest says their out this year (or whatever, totally made that up!) — then light on, girl! But if there was ONE thing that I could really try to have a conversation with my couples about, it would be first looks.
There are many advantages that I have covered numerous times — they relieve those wedding day jitters, it’s easier on your schedule, it allows more time for portraits, gives you time at your cocktail hour, etc — but above all, because it gives you more time with you significant other. Think about it… if you’re waiting until your 5:00PM ceremony to see one another, you won’t really get to talk until 6:00PM. But if you’re meeting for your first look at 2:00PM so we can do your couple, wedding party, and family portraits pre-ceremony, then you have HOURS more time with one another! Which at the end of the day, is really what it’s all about, right? Spending your wedding day with this person you want to spend all your best days with, for the rest of your life.
So while I may kindly try nudge to you in this direction, I still truly believe that each couple has to decide what is best for them!! Don’t let anyone spoil your vision for your wedding day; you only get one of these and it should be perfect!
