It’s certainly no understatement to say that the Willard InterContinental is one of the grandest hotels in the entire city, making it the perfect backdrop for a classic black tie wedding in Washington, DC. This is precisely what drew Darcy and Kevin to it and as soon as they toured the space, they knew it was the right fit. There was only one caveat: with two incredible room options side by side, it was possible that another wedding would be happening right next door. Mulling through their options, Darcy’s dad, David, came up with the final decision. Both rooms would be rented — one for the ceremony and one for the reception, allowing guests to fully enjoy every nook this wonderful place had to offer. I loved the contrast between the two rooms, but their opulence clearly tied them together.
Being a Washington, DC wedding photographer, I know that December affairs can be a challenge for many reasons. First, the sun sets so early, often before 5PM which doesn’t allow much time for portraits. Darcy and Kevin had already planned to do a first look, so I knew this wouldn’t be an issue. But secondly, and one that is out of our control, is the weather. I checked it religiously in the days leading up as they were calling for nonstop rain. Rain is one thing, I always come prepared for that, but those forecasts slowly turned to threats of ice and I realized we would have a challenge ahead of us. Luckily, I have THE most amazing brides and grooms and these two were not even stressed. The ice wrapped up by late morning and we had the shelter of the Lincoln Memorial to protect us from any residual weather lingering in the air. It truly was a perfect day and the sheen of the wet monument only made their images more uniquely beautiful.
D & K, it’s still hard to believe we only met a year ago, but I feel like I’ve gotten to know you so well in that time! Congratulations to you both and don’t forget to take lots of pictures when you head to Italy this spring!
A huge thank you to these vendors for making Darcy & Kevin’s wedding amazing!
