Welcome to my blog, where I share highlights of everything from my client's wedding days and portrait sessions, to recent features and our adventures around the world.

Hi, I'm Alicia.

Holland in Haymarket

May 6, 2014

If you’ve been following my blog for any amount of time, you’ll know that my husband, Rob, and I absolutely love travel. We’ve been to several different countries and have some trips coming up, but still seem to have a never-ending bucket list. Some spots are just beautiful cities or landscapes that we would love to see in our lifetime; others are destinations that are unique at a certain time of year for one reason or another — think, winter in Iceland for the Nothern Lights, July in Provence for the lavender, or Holland in the spring for the tulip festival. We’ve been to Amsterdam and it’s actually a very beautiful place. We weren’t quite sure what to expect given it’s often “bad” reputation, but it ended up being one of our favorite stops. We were, unfortunately, a bit too late in the season to head out to the countryside to see the tulip festival, but are hoping to return another time as I’m sure it’s epic. In lieu of all that, we did find a local place that does the same thing on a much smaller scale!

Burnside Farms in Haymarket, VA has an annual “Holland in Haymarket” festival. I’ve been wanting to go since last year, but with moving we just didn’t have time. The flowers were a bit delayed this year due to the nasty winter, but once we arrived it definitely did not disappoint! They take two huge fields and fill one with daffodils and the other with tulips, reminiscent of the tulip fields that are found in Holland. They also add in quite a few touches to make it feel more authentic: wooden shoes, “passports”, and baskets to take out to the field so you can pick some stems to take home with you.

Bonus: there are barn animals in the back of the farm and baby chicks near the checkout — they are too cute! Are there any unique places to visit near your town?
