Welcome to my blog, where I share highlights of everything from my client's wedding days and portrait sessions, to recent features and our adventures around the world.

Hi, I'm Alicia.

White House Kitchen Garden

Jul 7, 2016

Being a Washinton, DC wedding photographer and living near this city is a pretty incredible opportunity. Rob and I definitely don’t hide our love for travel and have visited many of the major cities within the US — Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco.  Through these experiences, we have found that each city has their own little niche that comes alive as you meander their streets and begin to indulge in their culture. DC is not unlike this and I think it’s very clear that this city’s “thing” is sheer abundance of history that is contained within such a small area. Step outside of any building and look around – you’re sure to see a monument, statue, or historical marker of some sort. Just thinking about how I get to photograph client’s engagements and anniversaries only seconds away from where our President makes some of the biggest decisions in the world can feel pretty profound.

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to volunteer to work in the garden of the White House and jumped at the chance, secretly hoping to become besties with Bo, but happy to swap fashion tips with Michelle. Well, I’m still here, so neither of those happened, but it was still surreal! I’d visited once before on the Christmas Tour, but hadn’t had the chance to see the grounds. We spent the morning clearing infested spinach from the beds because apparently those bugs didn’t care about breaching security.

This is the first garden on the property in nearly a decade and is actually used by the White House chefs, hence the name, “Kitchen Garden”. This certainly isn’t a political blog, but whether or not you voted for our President, I think we can all agree that what our First Lady has done through her Let’s Move campaign is life changing for future children. As someone who remembers getting pizza, a brownie, and chocolate milk for school lunch (let’s be honest, I still eat that for lunch…), I can definitely say we will all benefit from learning healthy habits at an early age.
